Abstract

This review examines the considerable confusion in terminology, ages, and descriptions of facies in the published literature on the Palaeogene of Central Sarawak. We document numerous errors in fact and also use new analyses to validate old Geological Survey data. Environmental data from microfossils is especially important for identifying two distinct unconformities that had previously been merged as the singular “Rajang Unconformity”. No break in burial (thermal) maturity is present over either of these unconformities in the area around the town of Tatau, and a new stratigraphic history is proposed that involves rapid changes in basin form and depositional sequences, rather than a single division in the tectono-stratigraphic record.
