Abstract

The Subis-2 well (drilled 1951-53) is re-examined in light of fieldwork near the town of Tatau about 160 km away. The original workers noted that there were strong similarities between the two areas, and we interpret that both areas were subject to strong uplift within the Early Oligocene, although lacking the deformation seen in the Sibu Zone to the south (the Sarawak Orogeny of previous authors). Both areas were then subject to the onset of new subsidence so that thick, aggrading coastal plain to very shallow marine sediments to accumulate. Other wells in Sarawak are reviewed to draw up provisional palaeogeography maps indicating a new tectono-stratigraphic history for the region. This initial review is offered as a hypothesis for further investigation.
